Proximity to Pool no boost for Grezza

Goals by Jamie Proctor and Gareth Evans ensured Town left Scunthorpe last night as 2-0 winners and as the only team with a 100 per cent record in League One.

And with Blackpool bottom of the Championship after three defeats, there’s just one position between the Fylde coast’s two League clubs.

But Alexander was interested only in points, insisting it is wins that are important to Town chief Andy Pilley.

The Town boss said: “The chairman will be happy because we’ve won.

“I know Blackpool are close rivals in terms of location but we’ve enough on our plate dealing with the teams in our own division.

“We’re delighted with what we’ve done so far but we’re not getting carried away.

“The chairman will be happy because he likes winning, that’s it. We’ve just got to make sure we carry on doing that.”

Fleetwood were frustrated at Glanford Park but demonstrated the gulf that has grown between the two promoted clubs over the summer.

David Ball could have scored twice before the break, but it took Town 71 minutes to end the deadlock, Ball twisting and turning in the box to tee up Proctor for his third in as many games.

Evans’ back post header from Steven Schumacher’s free-kick sealed a second away win in four days.

Alexander explained how he had urged his men to keep their cool.

He said: “It’s really pleasing because we know what a tough place this is to come.

“We found that last season, and we thought after they lost 4-0 to Preston on Saturday there would be a response.

“I thought we were very professional and looked dangerous when we went forward.

“We told them at half-time to just be patient and not give anything away because we would create chances. We’ve scored two great goals.”

The only blemish on Town’s record so far this season is the Capital One Cup defeat at Rotherham a week ago.

It’s a result which still grates with Alexander, despite Fleetwood’s stunning start.

He added: “We’d love to have won all three away games. We thought we were hard done by at Rotherham. But we’ve had two clean sheets away from home since and that’s a good rock to build on.

“We’ve just got to make sure we do the work day in and day out to get the performances like this one.”

Having put so much focus on Fleetwood’s defensive work in recent weeks, Alexander was full of praise for his attacking force.

Both goals were right out of the top-drawer and Alexander said: “I thought the skill from David Ball was fantastic.

“It’s a great ball into a great area, and Jamie Proctor’s finished it off.

“We encourage all our strikers to get into those areas. That’s where you score goals. It’s a fantastic finish and gave us the base to win the game. The second is a great delivery and Gareth Evans has got a great header for the goal.”

Town won despite missing defensive rock Nathan Pond with a knee injury.

Liam Hogan replaced him at centre-half, looking assured alongside Stephen Jordan as Town were rarely troubled at Glanford Park.

It was Fleetwood’s first win over the Iron, who pipped them to automatic promotion last season.

Alexander played that down, saying: “Whether they finished above us last year or not we all started with the same points this time around. We’re just pleased with a fantastic performance and result.

“It keeps the ball rolling but we’ve got to make sure we keep our feet on the ground despite our confidence.”
