Pressley livid with referee after Maxwell hurt by '˜object' thrown from crowd.

Fleetwood Town manager Steven Pressley has slammed referee Carl Boyeson after goalkeeper Chris Maxwell was apparently struck on the head by a coin thrown from the Sheffield United end in Saturday's 2-2 Highbury draw.

Pressley claims that the referee told Maxwell it was his own fault that a missile was thrown.

Maxwell was furious that the official had awarded Sheffield United a penalty in injury time, when Town were 2-1 up.

Before Che Adams stepped up to convert the spot-kick, Maxwell appeared to be hit by an object thrown from behind his goal, where the Blades fans were massed.

Maxwell suffered a cut above his eye and Pressley said he will report the referee’s reaction.

Pressley said: “I was really disappointed with the officiating of the game.

“I thought the decisions were extremely poor and what summed up his performance was that Chris Maxwell was hit by an object in the last minute of the game.

“He has actually got a cut above his eye.

“The response from the referee to him was that it was his own fault.

“You cannot condone any type of comment from any official like that.

“We will make sure that we report that type of comment to the appropriate governing body.

“It is completely unacceptable and it wasn’t just heard by Chris but it was heard by another witness, one of our players.

“It is something that we will report and something that is totally unacceptable in the game.

“The one thing that we can’t accept is a comment like that from an official.

“Nothing can condone the incident that occurred.

“Regardless of Chris’ reactions that type of comment is purely unacceptable.

“It is just above his eye and a bit like the Chris Brunt incident it could have quite easily have taken his eye out.”
