Pressley just can't believe Fleetwood misses

Although Wes Burns scored Town’s first goal in four games at Swindon, manager Pressley was flabbergasted by the number of chances his side wasted in the 1-1 draw at the County Ground.

Town carved out 13 opportunities, hit the woodwork three times, had an effort cleared off the line and wasted two one-on-one opportunities to add to Burns’ sixth-minute header.

Swindon striker Nicky Ajose showed Fleetwood how it is done in the 68th minute as he pounced from close range and the Robins pinched a point, having conceded 10 in their two Easter games.

The draw took Fleetwood a point clear of the drop zone as relegation rivals Oldham were without a match and third-bottom Doncaster also drew.

And Town can overtake Blackpool tomorrow with victory at home to Peterborough in the first of two games in hand over their Fylde coast neighbours.

That was little consolation to Pressley, who said he had never seen a side waste as many chances as his players did at Swindon.

The Town boss said: “I thought we were excellent in the first half, I really did.

“I thought we gave a really excellent performance and were in control of the game.

“I felt in the second half the game was far more open. It was end to end football.

“You cannot have the number of chances we have had today and not win the game. It is impossible.

“I have never in my time as a manager seen so many misses in one particular game.

“I think that when you look over the course of recent games and the season as a whole, it is evident that goalscoring is a problem for us and we have to react to that.

“The one thing I have said to the players is that it is unacceptable to miss those chances.

“We have to win those games. There is no doubt that in our survival quest that is a game that we really should have won.

“We are creating the moments, we are creating the chances, but we have to have more clinical finishing at the end of the day.

“Our strikers know that we have to be far more clinical.

“We have to convert those chances if we are to have have any chance of staying in the league.

“I honestly have never been involved in a game where a side has created and missed so many chances.”

And Pressley says there are no excuses for missing the chances they created.

He said: “There is nobody in the squad at this moment in time that has a proven history of getting you 15 or 20 goals.

“It has always been a problem from the start of the season.

“If you look at the squad we have not got a prolific goal scorer.

“But there is no excuse for not scoring the goals with the chances we created at Swindon.

“We are extremely disappointed.

One striker who did make an impact was Burns who scored on his return to the starting 11 after playing two games for Wales U21 over the Easter period.

And Pressley says more players need to step up and find the net.

“Wes has played two games in quick succession and he returned home late on Wednesday and he looked a little bit fatigued as the game progressed.

“It is another goal for him we need more players adding to that tally.”
