The three points lifted Town into 19th place in League One, above neighbours Blackpool on goal difference and still with a game in hand.

Pressley’s men pressed, passed and prowled their way to victory and kept a clean sheet against the second-highest goalscorers in the league.

But despite the fine performance, Town are still teetering just one point above the drop zone because Oldham were also 2-0 home winners last night against Swindon.

Town’s win was powered by a slick 38th-minute Wes Burns strike and a brave 68th-minute diving header by Eggert Jonsson, and was also made possible by keeper Chris Maxwell’s legs.

The Welsh shot-stopper managed to save Michael Bostwick’s 44th-minute penalty to prevent Posh drawing level.

Town brushed off the disappointment of all their missed chances in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Swindon and Pressley says the momentum must be maintained as they enter the last six games of their relegation battle.

The Town boss said: “It is a massive result. We were very clear that we needed to win last night, and I’ve been saying for some time that it is very important that we keep our destiny in our own hands.

“We did that against Peterborough and I was so proud of the players.

“It was a phenomenal performance. There was an unbelievable desire and we showed great bravery.

“The key at this part of the season is momentum.

“We have gone three games without defeat (draws against Chesterfield and Swindon preceded last night’s win). We had a really good period, then we lost three on the spin.

“Thatset us back, then we have come back strong again with three results and so there is a belief about the group again.”

And Pressley praised all of his players for picking up all three points as their League One survival quest was boosted by ending a six match winless streak.

He said: “It is easy in situations like this to stop doing the things we preach, to pass the ball, to play with purpose and press with intensity, but we didn’t stop doing those things.

“I thought they were exceptional against a really good Peterborough side, a side that hardly ever fail to score goals and for us to keep a clean sheet tonight to deny them to very few opportunities is testament to the players’ performances.”
