Ball might have had a goal of his own when sent clear by Sarcevic, unable to find the target after a tenacious charge into the box.

Fleetwood took their foot off the gas after the break, coming under increasing pressure.

Achille Campion could have snatched one back when Chris Maxwell spilled the ball in a collision with Tyler Forbes, Nathan Pond with a vital clearance.

Then Maxwell pulled off a superb save to deny Tom Pope from close range.

It was galling for Fleetwood’s clean sheet to be denied with virtually the last kick, Michael O’Connor’s shot deflected off Nathan Pond in the fourth minute of added time.

Even so Fleetwood secured tenth spot and a top half finish - a respectable end to their debut League One campaign.
