Pond: Fleetwood are building momentum

Fleetwood haven’t lost away from home since their defeat at Blackpool back in November– an improvement of sorts after a troubled start to the campaign.

And, having battled from behind in each of their last three League One road trips, Pond is pleased to see Fleetwood showing their stubborn side.

The Town skipper told The Gazette: “I said to the lads that early on in the season we’d have lost that game in Colchester 1-0.”

“Going a goal down was tough, but we were sure we could get back into the game and that’s the difference.

“We were maybe unlucky not to take the three points at the end.”

The point did little to haul Town clear of the drop zone and meant they failed to overhaul Blackpool, but Pond insists every positive result counts.

And with back-to-back home games to come against Doncaster and Walsall, he’s pleased to see an unbeaten run developing.

“It’s positive for us to take points in any game – it just keeps the momentum going,” he said.

“We’ve been unlucky in a few games too – like Shrewsbury and Crewe – games we should have won.

“We’ve not played anywhere near as well on Tuesday as we did in those games but we still got the same return.”

Town are unbeaten in three games in 2016 and have taken four points from the two League matches.

And with Highbury yielding some impressive results this term, Pond is hoping his teamcan start to reap the rewards from their hard work under manager Steven Pressley.

“We’re playing good football,” he said. “Tuesday wasn’t a good example but we’ve definitely improved our passing game.

“I think the results will come. We’re undefeated this year and we’ve got two home games coming up. Hopefully we’ll get maximum points from those.

“Tuesday was a good point after a long couple of days. I don’t think it was our best performance of the season but earlier on we were getting nothing from our performances.

“We haven’t been at our best but we’ve got a point.”

As for the two games in four days coming up at Highbury, Pond is hoping that playing two sides not involved in the scrap at the bottom will help Town to produce more expansive football.

“Credit to Colchester in a way – they set up not to get beaten,” he said.

“When you have a side set up like that and they get the first goal it’s always more difficult.

“But we’ve come at them, forced the issue and they’ve made lots of mistakes.

“When you play top sides, they won’t sit back like that. They’ll come at us and that suits us.”

Doncaster, who head to the Fylde coast on Saturday, have hauled themselves away from the struggling pack and Pond believes Town can do the same.

But he knows they can’t afford to let their standards drop as they did in Essex this week.

“As soon as you put a run together you move up,” said the centre-half.

“But you get a kick in the teeth if you don’t perform well.

“We just need to take it on to Saturday.”
