But the Cod Army gaffer was quick to take the positives after running a side who played in the Championship last season close in a 3-2 thriller at The Valley.

The Addicks hadn’t conceded for around nine hours before Ched Evans’ brilliant quickfire brace drew Town level at half-time only for Conor Washington's penalty to seal a sixth straight win for Lee Bowyer's side.

“I’m really disappointed to leave here without three points,” reflected Barton.

“I keep going on about it so it’s a bit annoying me making an argument for us not losing any games this season.

“We’ve got to learn the lessons and we’re still bedding in a new side really.

“I thought there were some really positive signs coming to a place like The Valley, with Charlton on the run they are on, and putting the game right on their toes.

“I’m disappointed to lose but they are a good side and I think our lads will take a lot from it.

“When they went 2-0 up with their defensive record - they hadn’t conceded for about nine hours was doing the rounds on Twitter - you fear the worst. So you knew it was going to be tough.

“Firstly, I thought we showed great character to climb up off the canvas having been sucker-punched.

“We conceded a set-piece goal and then got caught on the counter by them.

“We will never fear playing Charlton, whether that’s when they come to our place or whether it’s a play-off berth come the end of the season.”
