Pilley admits Fleetwood and Halifax would bag cash sum if Vardy joins Arsenal

Arsenal allegedly triggered a £20m clause in Vardy’s three-year £80,000 a week deal at Premier League winners and rivals Leicester City on Friday.

Vardy joined the Foxes from Fleetwood for £1m in 2012 and Pilley admitted that the club added a sell-on clause to that transfer arrangement.

It is rumoured that Fleetwood would be on course to net 20 percent (£4m) of the fee but Pilley says it would be inappropriate to reveal the potential figure.

Vardy joined Fleetwood from Halifax - who were recently relegated from the National League to the National League North last term - for an undisclosed fee in 2011.

Pilley says Halifax negotiated a sell-on clause when Vardy moved to Highbury and that the non-league Yorkshire outfit received a fee from Vardy’s transfer to Leicester and that they will receive some money if this Arsenal deal goes ahead.

He said: “There is a sell-on clause.

“I would not want to say how much.

“It would be inappropriate to suggest how much.

“Of course any money received is gratefully received.

“It would not stop with us, it is also passed on to Halifax.

“A sell-on clause is pretty standard and Halifax have a sell-on clause so it filters down the football pyramid and it helps a lot of clubs at different levels.

“Leicester have been first class throughout the whole process and I was delighted to see them achieve what they did last season.”

Vardy was expected to announce his decision before England flew to France for Euro 16 on Monday.

But the 29-year-old is yet to comment on his future and it is believed that he will only announce his decision when England’s tournament ends.

And Pilley says that despite reports in the national press the figure - if received - would not be life changing or dramatically change Town’s business outlook.

He said: “The national press have said it could change Fleetwood.

“But we would get a relatively small amount back and it would not be life changing.

“We we will not be changing our business plan and we will not be going on a spending spree if it happens.

“We will continue to run the club like we always have done.”

Pillley added that the club are incredibly proud of the striker and says he believes Vardy has not yet peaked - despite scoring 27 goals and helping fire underdogs Leicester City to the title.

He said: “We are incredibly proud of Jamie.

“It is extraordinary how well he has done and the frightening thing is I don’t think he has even peaked yet and hopefully he can lead England to glory at Euro 16.

“We knew Jamie was very, very good but I’d be lying if I said I thought he would be the Football Writers’ Association player of the year and to score a back heel against the world champions (Germany) but we knew he was a special player.”
