The striker gave Pool hope against Micky Mellon’s Shrews when his third goal in five games made it 3-2 after 54 minutes, but Pool couldn’t find an equaliser.

And the former Oldham man was unimpressed with the start which left his side trailing 3-0.

Philliskirk said: “It was a crazy game. I don’t think I’ve been involved in one like that before.

“We were three down in 30 minutes but in the end I thought we could have got something out of the game.

“The manager wasn’t happy at half-time but he shouldn’t be. We let him down and let ourselves down in that first half.

“But the important thing is we showed character in the second half and should have got something from it.”

They may well have done so had not Shrews keeper Jayson Leutwiler twice denied Philliskirk, who vividly recalled a volleyed effort two minutes before he scored.

The 24-year-old said: “If I’d mishit that it would probably have gone in but I’m not making excuses.

“If I can keep getting into those positions, then hopefully the goals will flow.

“We just needed a bit of luck when it went to 3-2. Brad Potts had an effort tipped on to the bar and I had a couple cleared off the line.”

The results closes the gap between Blackpool and the relegation zone to three points, making tomorrow’s visit of Philliskirk’s former club Oldham to Bloomfield Road all the more important.

The Latics are second-bottom and the striker is sure a different Pool will take the field.

He said: “I’m sure we won’t play like that in the first 30 minutes. We can’t shoot ourselves in the foot like that.

“Since I’ve been here we’ve been very solid defensively. It was unlike us.”
