Out of contract at Tranmere Rovers, the 26-year-old has been training with Town throughout pre-season and accompanied the squad on last week's tour to Hungary.

His second permanent spell at Tranmere was hampered by a knee injury which kept him off the field for 10 months and restricted him to a dozen appearances in 18 months at Prenton Park.

A product of the Everton youth system, the Liverpudlian first joined Tranmere in 2012 and then spent two and a half years at Sheffield United, where injuries again slowed his progress.

He has played on loan for Stockport County and Shrewsbury, representing England at Under-19 and U20 levels.

Town head coach Joey Barton said: “He’s been with us since the first day of pre-season, so he has every right to be part of the group moving forward.

“He has everything to prove and we want to give him an opportunity at Fleetwood to show us what he can do.

"He’s been a great addition, and has great leadership qualities and great quality in possession on the pitch.

“We want to get him fit and get him on the pitch, because if we do we feel he can be a huge asset to us.”
