McPhillips' Walsall warning for Blackpool players

Interim Blackpool boss Terry McPhillips is not expecting Walsall to change the winning formula that has proven so successful in League One so far this season.

The Saddlers remain unbeaten after five league games, winning four of them to sit in fourth place in the table.

A 4-4-2 formation has been the staple of their success and McPhillips isn’t expecting Dean Keates to change from that during Saturday’s game at the Bescot Stadium.

“They’ve had a great start and their manager is used to winning games at Conference level,” McPhillips said.

“They play 4-4-2, that’s what we’re expecting. We can do similar ourselves, we’ve got plenty of options up there.

“But that’s what Walsall have been doing and that’s what they’ve had success with, so I don’t see any reason why they’d change that seeing as they’re the home team.

“Their two lads that have come in from non-league in Andy Cook and Morgan Ferrier have both had good starts and are scoring goals.

“So we’re expecting a tough game down there but we go there full of confidence with the run we’re on – five unbeaten.

“In particular, if we can keep creating chances as we have been recently and we’re a bit better in the final third, we certainly fancy our chances against most.

“We’ve had a little look at them and we will show the lads a bit more of them before travelling down, prepare properly and give it a good go Saturday.”

The Seasiders could be without four injured players tomorrow, with doubts still hanging over Jimmy Ryan, Ryan McLaughlin, Donervon Daniels and Joe Bunney.

Ryan, McLaughlin and Daniels did take part in training on Thursday and McPhillips believes McLaughlin is the most likely to be available for selection.

“They’re going to give us some headaches when they’re back, I know that,” he added.

“Ryan McLaughlin was superb in training on Thursday, as they all were to be fair. He’s probably looking the closest.”
