The manager said of the 2-1 victory at fellow strugglers Crewe: “The only disappointment for me was that we didn’t score more goals but we’ll take the result and the three points.

“We went through every single emotion in that game but you have to try to keep calm. I thought we did that excellently.

“We have worked on getting people into the box more because we need to score more goals. I think we did that really well and came out worthy winners because of it.”

And after having Jack Redshaw sent off before half-time, McDonald added: “We had to stand up and be counted, and we did that.

“In the second half we counter-attacked really well. We just couldn’t finish them off.

“The players but their bodies on the line and showed me they are up for the fight.

“They certainly don’t like getting beaten and they hadn’t won for a while, so they are feeling good about themselves. It was nice to get that bit of luck.”
