Other changes to the side beaten at Padiham three weeks earlier included the return of Joey Mullen and of Ryan Riley up front, replacing top scorer Gary Pett who had joined Bamber Bridge.

Isaac Sinclair, son of former Blackpool and England winger Trevor Sinclair, was among the substitutes.

The visitors had won five of their previous six games and opened the scoring after only seven minutes.

The impressive Jack Hazlehurst reacted quickest to tap home after a good save by Ben Fletcher.

Gate could have levelled six minutes later but Ryan Riley scuffed his shot straight at the keeper.

Riley had another chance from Scott Harries' cross and Liverpool doubled their lead on 28 minutes, when Dean Shacklock scored his fourth in five games, curling in a superb shot from outside the box.

Gate manager Andy Clarkson made two changes at half-time as Dan Gary and debutant Sinclair came on from Joey Mullen and Jake Higham.

These changes made a difference and Gate pulled one back on 59 minutes, when Riley went down under a challenge from keeper Michael Langley but recovered quickly to square the ball for Harries to score.

Gate were the better side in the second half and equalised on 67 minutes. The ball ran loose in the Liverpool box from a free-kick and Dean Ing was in the right place to tap home.

The momentum was all with Gate, who scored the winner five minutes later, when Max Rothwell's first-time shot from 30 yards flew into the top corner.

Sinclair almost crowned his debut with a goal but his shot was blocked, and although the visitors piled on the pressure late on Gate saw out the game.

A delighted Clarkson said: "We were superb in the second half. Our reaction after grabbing a goal back was really pleasing and the momentum we took on to win the game was superb.

"Credit to the two young lads who came on at half-time and changed the game for us - a 16-year-old (Sinclair) and an 18-year-old (Gray). "

The win lifts Gate to 14th in the Hallmark Security League premier division.
