The game looked all set for a 1-1 draw after Gate had equalised at the start of the second half before a triple substitution injected life into the visitors.

Gate were down to the bare bones with seven first team players injured or unavailable.

West had the chance to open the scoring after 11 minutes with the first chance for either side.

A deep cross was played into the back post where Joe Shaw met the ball but poked it across goal.

Gate were then saved when keeper Andy Speight did well to save.

Gate’s best chance of the opening exchanges came when Charlie Waters took aim from the edge of the box but fired well over the bar.

Minutes later Gate would go close again; Connor Smith found Ben Seear, whose cross was smothered by the keeper before Tarren Moxon could meet it.

Player-manager Danny Penswick put his body on the line a minute later, diving in to block a shot after Speight did well to punch clear.

West took the lead after 36 minutes through Nic Evangelinos, who showed a lovely touch to evade Speight before tapping into the empty net.

The second half would start perfectly for Gate who scored after one minute, Seear pouncing after the ball got stuck in the mud inside the six-yard area.

Gate would battle hard and see a lot of the ball but the game would change in the last 15 minutes as West brought on three subs whochanged the game.

The visitors ramped up the pressure with Evangelinos tapping in his second of the game at the near post.

Two minutes later and the same player completed his hat-trick, picking up the ball on the edge of the box and unleashing a lovely curling shot into the bottom corner.

Gate were very unlucky and performed well against one of the better sides in the league but will have to go again on Wednesday at AFC Darwen.
