MATCH REPORT: Blackpool 4-2 Doncaster

Doncaster raced into the lead within the first minute of the game when Andy Taylor inadvertently turned into his own net.

But two goals from Brad Potts and one apiece for Kelvin Mellor and Kyle Vassell handed the Seasiders a much-needed three points, as they climbed up the league table.

As a boisterous “stand up if you hate Oyston” chant rang out from the Doncaster fans, their side took the lead with the first attack of the game with Andy Taylor turning the ball into his own net from James Coppinger’s cross.

Not even a minute had passed when the left-back’s attempted block flew into the roof of the net.

Blackpool’s first venture in Doncaster territory saw Jamille Matt go close, when a pull back from Brad Potts found the forward man in the box only to be thwarted by a Rovers defender.

Blackpool’s opening 20 minutes was summed up when the referee was forced to change balls, as the original one was deemed to be too deflated - much like the home side’s performance up to that point.

However, they found themselves on level terms when they took advantage of lax Doncaster defending, with Potts firing in at the near post after Kyle Vassell had taken a quick free kick.

Matt found himself in the thick of the action once again when his flick-on from Jack Payne’s long throw, which looked to be heading towards the top corner, was cleared away from the danger area.

Blackpool took the lead after taking advantage of more poor defending from the visitors. Danny Pugh’s cross, intended for the head of Jamille Matt, found its way to Kelvin Mellor at the back post whose lobbed effort somehow made it into the back of the net.

The away side pressed in the final moments of the first half as they looked to get back on level terms, but Blackpool held firm.

The second half, just like the first, opened with an early goal with that man Brad Potts extending Blackpool’s lead.

He picked himself up after being fouled and fired a cracking 25-yard effort into the bottom corner after Danny Pugh’s lay-off.

But Pool weren’t content with their two-goal lead and pushed ahead for a fourth, and it soon came.

Doncaster were caught in possession in defence and Kyle Vassell punished the visitors with a curled left-footed effort into the bottom corner.

The visitors were gifted a way back into the match when Danny Rowe was fouled in the penalty area. He stepped up and dispatched into the bottom corner, despite Sam Slocombe diving the right way.

Blackpool were then happy to sit in and let Doncaster have most of the possession as they struggled to break down the hosts.

Doncaster were given their second penalty of the game when John Marquis was fouled by ‘keeper Sam Slocombe.

But Rowe’s second spot-kick of the day was superbly saved by Slocombe and Blackpool saw out the rest of the game for a vital three points.
