Town seal third straight win with impressive display against Oxford

Town have conceded only one goal in five games and in-form keeper Jayson Leutwiler would not have been at Highbury this season had not Barton’s new number one Joel Coleman been injured in the Carabao Cup win over Wigan Athletic.

The Canada international, beaten only twice in seven Fleetwood games, saved a penalty against Oxford United on Saturday and Barton is delighted with his contribution.

He added: “It was a tad harsh on Charlie (Mulgrew) – it looked a soft penalty.

“And with the distance the referee and the linesman were away from it, if he’s going to give that he’s going to give five or six a game.

“Then the big keeper comes through. I think since he’s come into the side he’s been outstanding.

“He conceded at Accrington and against Hull, and then he’s had three shutouts off the back of that.

“Against Oxford, there was not only the penalty save but the free-kicks being put into the box. He’s coming and claiming them and punching them.

“That breeds confidence in the back-line and he’s been a huge component in why the defence have solidified, as well as Tom Edwards, Callum Connolly and Charlie Mulgrew coming in.

“I thought Danny Andrew had his best game for us so far this season.”

The club shop and ticket office at Highbury will be closed until further notice due to the national lockdown.
