Jonsson aims for safety and Euro 2016

The midfielder’s native Iceland have qualified for the tournament, being staged in France this summer.

And, having appeared for the national team 19 times, Jonsson is hoping to catch the eye of managers Heimir Hallgrímsson and Lars Lagerbäck ahead of the championships, which kick-off in Paris on June 10.

Iceland are in Group F, with Hungary, Austria and Portugal – an eyewatering prospect for any League One player.

Jonsson, who played 134 times for Hearts, is enjoying playing regular football at Highbury but knows that climbing the League One table can aid his international cause.

“It’s always my aim to get back in there (the national team),” said the 27-year-old. “Hopefully the manager and coaches there know of me.

“I’m sure they do – I’ve been in the squad a few times before.

“I’m just happy to be playing again and helping Fleetwood climb the table. If we can get higher in the league, I’ll have a better chance.

“We just need a few better results than we’ve had in the last couple of months but I’m sure we’ll get there.”

Town picked up a vital 1-1 draw on Saturday at Barnsley, a first-leg result which very much keeps them in the running for a day out at Wembley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

The draw not only gave Fleetwood a fighting chance in the return leg of their Northern Area Final, at Highbury on February 2, but also continued an upward swing in their away form.

Fleetwood haven’t lost on the road since their narrow derby defeat to Blackpool on November 28 – form they will be hoping to continue when they travel to Rochdale on Saturday.

Indeed, Jonsson believes it’s only a matter of time before those one-point gains on the road become threes.

He said: “We felt like we should have improved our away form.

“The manager said a few weeks ago that it was something we needed to get right. On Saturday we were certainly improved.

“We showed great fight and spirit to come away with a draw.

“If we keep working hard, then sooner rather than later we’ll be changing the draws into wins.”

Town’s draw on Saturday does nothing for their League One standing but certainly keeps them in the chase to reach the JPT final.

And Jonsson believes Town should have the confidence to finish the job in under three weeks.

“We feel we’ll have the advantage going into the second leg,” he said.

“The competition is tough. It was hard going on Saturday, especially with the conditions.

“Sometimes it turned into a scrappy game, which is better for them than us.

“We want to try to keep it down and play football.

“In the end we were disappointed with the result but not the performance.

“We knew Saturday was only the start. In the end we weren’t looking just to be in it – we wanted to kill it off. We could have if we’d taken our chances.

“But we’re still in it and there’s all to play for.”
