Town make winning start to League One campaign

Fleetwood’s top scorer in the last two seasons got off the mark in his first game of the new campaign, pouncing on a deflected shot from Mark Duffy to break Brewers’ hearts after John Brayford had cancelled out Callum Camps’ opener.

And the Cod Army head coach hailed Madden’s attitude as he goes all guns blazing for this year’s golden boot.

“Paddy has been the top scorer in the last two seasons,” said Barton following victory in the League One opener, which follows Town’s wins in the Carabao Cup and EFL Trophy.

“He missed the first couple of cup games through suspension but you just know he’s going to get you goals. He’ll be thinking about the one he missed, knowing Paddy, because he’ll have his eye on getting that golden boot. It’s all he talks about and thinks about, and you can see why because he’s always alive in the box.

“He took his goal really well and was probably a bit unfortunate not to have another one.”

Summer recruit Camps had drilled in the opener, and with both sides hitting the woodwork the outcome remained in the balance throughout.

Madden found the golden touch 11 minutes from time.
