How cheap is it at Blackpool FC and Fleetwood Town?

Fylde coast football fans benefit from some of the cheapest prices in the country, according to new figures.

A season ticket to Highbury to watch newly-promoted Fleetwood Town is the cheapest in League One at £179.50 – just £7.80 a match.

Only Charlton Athletic at £150 and Watford at £165 offer better value.

The BBC Sport Price of Football study, which is in its fourth year, compares the cost of entry, programmes, pies and a cup of tea at 176 grounds across Britain.

Buying season tickets represents a significant increase in value for money as match-day tickets at Fleetwood cost £17, while Blackpool fans must pay £24 if they decide to attend a match on the day of the game.

At both grounds, the combined cost of a pie and a brew is £4.50.

Fleetwood chairman Andy Pilley said: “We want to make football here affordable.

“It’s a difficult time for people across the Fylde, and we want to make sure people can have a family day out.

“We are growing as a football club and we need the fan base to grow also.

“There’s different ways of balancing the books. I’d rather have more people in to watch and charge them less.”

Andy Smart, a volunteer coach and committee member for Fleetwood Town juniors said: “The fact that Fleetwood offers free season tickets to under-16s and offers good prices for adults and seniors means following the club is affordable for families.

“This, coupled with the fact that the facilities and services at the ground are as good as a decent Championship club, means we are bringing a new generation of fans into the club.”

Blackpool Football Club’s head of retail Richard Wild said: “We feel our prices offer good value for money – it’s priced according to the area and we don’t try to exploit fans out of every last penny.

“If you buy a season ticket, it equates to £8.50 a game watching in good facilities which for the second tier of English football can’t be bad.”
