Grezza: Striker drought not deserved

Fleetwood Town’s attacking players deserve goals insists boss Graham Alexander – despite a drought stretching back to November 1.

With the addition of Liam McAlinden and the return from injury of David Ball, Alexander has four strikers to choose from.

But none of those have found the net in the last three months, Tom Hitchcock the last striker to score for Fleetwood in the 1-0 home win over Gillingham.

Fleetwood have struggled for goals this campaign and average just one per game, the second-lowest tally in the top half of League One.

Jamie Proctor came close to breaking the lean streak on Saturday, forcing a late save from Crawley keeper Lewis Price.

And Alexander insists the story for his attacking players could have been very different.

He said: “The forwards have deserved goals because their workrate and the way they bring others into play has been first-class. Oxygen for strikers is goals. Jamie Proctor was disappointed on Saturday.

“His was a great strike and the lad’s made a great save. Unless he keeps getting in those positions and keeps hitting the target, then he won’t score.”

All the manager can do it hope his forwards keep getting into the right position to test the keeper.

He said: “If the keeper has to make five good saves to stop our lads scoring, we’ll take that. There are some good goalkeepers about.

“If you’re not putting yourself in those positions or getting those chances, that’s when you worry.”

Only three teams in the top half have conceded fewer goals than Fleetwood – leaders Swindon Town, third-placed MK Dons and second-placed Bristol City, who host Graham Alexander’s men at Ashton Gate on Sunday.

Town’s no frills 1-0 victory over Crawley Town at the weekend saw them jump into the play-off places.
