Armstrong, 29 who can play wing, centre or full-back, has joined Fylde from Birmingham Moseley who were relegated from the Championship in April and against whom Fylde open their National One campaign on September 3.

Armstrong began his rugby career as a product of the Leeds (now Yorkshire Carnegie) academy before joining Premiership club Northampton Saints in 2011. Two years later he moved to Moseley.

He has made 115 appearances for the three clubs including 30 Premiership games for Leeds & Northampton and a number of Heineken Cup matches.

During his three seasons with Moseley he was a long distance commuter from his Carnforth farm, often travelling the 300 mile round trip.

Fylde player-coach Paul Arnold said: “We’re really pleased to have signed someone of Scott’s quality and experience.

“His professionalism will help the development of the young talent we already have at the club.

“He can cover three or four positions & will be a fantastic addition to the squad.”

Armstrong said: “I’m looking forward to moving home and playing for a local club and getting back into the swing of things.

“Speaking to ‘Arnie’ and a few players, everybody spoke highly of the club and the direction it’s going.

“Fylde like to play an expansive and free-flowing game which, hopefully I can contribute to and help push the club forward over the coming season.”

Lancaster-born Armstrong is 6ft 3in and 16-stone.

He was strength and conditioning coach at Bloomfield Road last season.
