Under-7s fun for Foxhall and St Annes Yellows

The first of these Blackpool and District Youth League development matches was a cracker, and more good football was played in last weekend’s Collins Park rematch until torrential rain forced the game to end early.

Both teams joined the league last season as under-7s, with managers who hope to lead their side through the age groups.

South Shore manager Matthew Green told The Gazette: “We’ve actually been together for nearly three years because I run a nursery and started the team at the back end of pre-school.

“It’s mostly the same children we started with and they are making really good progress.

“They have a great spirit and have been flying this season. We did a lot during lockdown, setting the players challenges, and it looks like we might have to do that again.”

CN Sports were a new club last season, formed by and named after Fylde coast sports coach Chris Nay and based at South Shore Cricket Club.

The club has grown fast and operates three U8s teams, with Reds and Tangerines as well as the Blues.

Blues coach Darren Gargate said: “We are the middle-ability group, so we win some, draw some and lose some, so the children experience all the highs and lows of sport.

“Chris recruited five parents to go on coaching courses, including myself, and the club is developing nicely.

“Most of our players attend St Nicholas’ C of E Primary School and a few go to Ansdell. We’ll be looking to recruit a few more for next season because they go up to seven-a-side at under-nine level.”

Despite the weather, this was one of many BDYL U8 and U9 development matches to go ahead last weekend as the players displayed their passing skills and had fun.

However, it appears these will be the last matches for a while as we enter the second lockdown.

But no doubt the players and clubs will again come up with innovative ideas to continue their training and learn new skills.
