The Scot ended his four-year spell with Tranmere Rovers to replace Robbie Neilson, who made the switch to Hearts after helping Dundee United back to the Scottish Premiership.

Former Blackpool midfielder Mellon, 48, managed Fleetwood for over four years from 2008-12, winning two promotions which saw the club climb into the Football League

Tranmere have just been relegated to League Two after back-to-back promotions under Mellon.

He guided Rovers to a 2-1 win against Blackpool at Bloomfield Road in the final game before the campaign was suspended.

The former Tranmere player, who has also enjoyed promotion with Shrewsbury, had a year remaining on his contract at Prenton Park.

Mellon told the Dundee United website: "I am very happy to be here at Dundee United. The challenge of managing the club in the Premiership is an exciting one. I look forward to meeting the players and am really keen to get started.”
