The 33-year-old has made just two starts for Graham Alexander’s side, playing in the home win over Gillingham - Fleetwood’s last victory on home turf - and the FA Cup defeat at Cambridge United.

Despite being fit to play Southern has in recent weeks not been part of Town’s matchday squad and did not travel with the team to Leyton Orient last weekend.

He took to social media this week to answer fans’ questions about his fitness posting on Twitter: “For the countless people asking “are u injured?” The answer is No I’m not!!! and have been fully fit for 4 months. #traineverday #justsaying”

At Shrewsbury Southern links up with former Fleetwood boss Micky Mellon.
