Town withstood Palace pressure after the break before Smith doubled the lead, latching on to Cian Hayes' pass after a strong run forward by Danny Edwards.

The visitors had a lifeline with 15 minutes remaining, when David Omilabu converted a penalty following a foul by Sam Barratt.

The Premier League club pressed for an equaliser but Fleetwood stood firm to reach the fourth-round stage for the second successive year.
