Forward Covey Smith scored both goals at Highbury for Town, who showed great determination to protect their lead in the closing stages after the London club pulled one back from the penalty spot.

Smith broke the deadlock shortly before half-time, collecting Joe Collins' pass before firing into the bottom corner.

Town withstood Palace pressure after the break before Smith doubled the lead, latching on to Cian Hayes' pass after a strong run forward by Danny Edwards.

The visitors had a lifeline with 15 minutes remaining, when David Omilabu converted a penalty following a foul by Sam Barratt.

The Premier League club pressed for an equaliser but Fleetwood stood firm to reach the fourth-round stage for the second successive year.
