The 22-year-old was a surprise selection last Saturday, making his full league debut in the draw with Accrington Stanley.

He followed that with his first league goal in Tuesday’s 2-1 win at high-flying Lincoln City

Grayson said: “I think Ged is probably the most natural striker of the ball and goalscorer we have at the club.

“His overall game was good at Lincoln. He gets into little pockets, he can handle the ball and you saw from his strike that he has fantastic execution as well.”

A product of the club’s academy, the Liverpudlian made his professional bow against Rochdale in the EFL Trophy in October 2018 and has made 13 senior appearances in all.

However, Garner hadn’t been seen for a while until interim boss Simon Wiles brought him off the bench during his last game in charge against Oxford United at the end of January.

He had been recalled a month earlier from a loan spell with non-league Gateshead and Grayson added: “Sometimes you offer players the opportunity to start and they let that opportunity pass them by, but on Saturday I thought Ged did well against Accrington.”

However, the head coach didn’t want to ignore Town’s other scorer at Lincoln, Callum Camps.

The club’s top scorer had reached 10 for the season by November but then went 19 games without a goal, losing his place in the side.

Back in the starting XI against Accrington, the midfielder scored his 11th of the campaign at Lincoln and Grayson said: “We’re delighted for Callum as well because he’s been through a bit of a drought recently after a fantastic start to the season.

“We’ve kept telling him to stay confident and have the belief that you will get back to scoring again, so it’s nice for him to get on the scoresheet.”

Another midfielder to earn plaudits at Sincil Bank was Dan Batty, signed from Hull City on Grayson’s first day at the club.

The Town boss said: “Dan has great ability and attitude, and a great appetite for the game. He has Championship experience and I like him as a player.

“He’s thriving in the role he’s playing and has a lot of good players alongside him.

“We’ve said for the past few weeks we were close to winning games and weren’t far from putting in a really good performance. Dan was a catalyst for it at Lincoln and other players were as well.”
