The Canada international, 31, has been given squad number 13 at Highbury and is available for tomorrow's League One opener against Burton Albion.

Born in Switzerland, Leutwiler came through the youth ranks at Basel and represented that country at youth levels.

He moved to England in 2012 to join Middlesbrough and two years later signed for the Shrews.

Leutwiler made 141 appearances over three seasons at Shrewsbury, 118 of them in the EFL, and helped the club win promotion to League One.

He has spent the last three seasons at Blackburn, making 13 appearances. He was released this summer, having played three times last season in cup competitions.

A hamstring injury against Wigan last weekend is likely to keep first-choice keeper Joel Coleman out of Fleetwood action for several months, and Leutwiler will now challenge Alex Cairns for the jersey.

Having taken Canadian citizenship, Leutwiler has represented that country three times.
