Fleetwood Town midfielder hopes to be called up by his country

Rumours have grown about a return to the Northern Ireland fold for the in-form midfielder.

Camps has represented his country at Under-21 and U18 levels but is yet to make his senior international bow.

The Cod Army’s number 10 has already notched eight league goals this season, more often than not in spectacular fashion.

But Camps, who turns 25 at the end of the month, is just focusing on his performances, though he is open to the call if or when it arrives.

He said: “I’ve been away from it for a while but now I’ve started the season well it puts me in the mind of the manager. Whatever the manager chooses to do, I’d be happy.

“It’s not up to me to decide, it’s up to them. I’ve just got to keep doing what I’m doing and hopefully the call will come.

“You’ve got to back yourself all the way. It’s the same as this season, coming here and backing myself to do well and carry on from there.

“If I do get a call-up whenever that comes, or if it comes, I’ve got to back myself, be confident going in there and see how it goes.”

Camps also acknowledged the quality of the squad around him has played a part in his Fleetwood form.

The midfield area is arguably the strongest at the club, with Paul Coutts, Glenn Whelan, Jordan Rossiter, Mark Duffy, Josh Morris and Sam Finley all in contention for a starting spot.

Camps is well aware that if his standards slip there are players waiting to take his shirt. “It’s just the demands every day in training,” he said. “You can’t just go in and do what you want. There is a demand there every day.

“It keeps you on your toes with the squad we’ve got, including the players brought in like Sam Finley. You know that if you’re not training well, any player can come in and take your place.

“That’s one of the main factors of coming to Fleetwood. With players like Whelan, Coutts, Ched (Evans) and Paddy (Madden), I knew that I would get better coming here.”
