The visitors could have sprung into an early lead when Marcus Maddison burst into the box, his effort tipped wide by Chris Maxwell.

They did have the ball in the back of the net after 10 minutes, Joe Newell racing clear and slotting neatly past Maxwell only to have his effort ruled offside.

Fleetwood were struggling to create chances, young Nick Haughton their best outlet.

He fired just wide from a set piece and created another opening with a neat touch to release Jamie Proctor, Josh Morris set up to cross but nobody in a red shirt able to get on the end.

It was a tight affair with chances at a premium.

Newell made the most of space wide on the left, skipping past his man and launching a stunning curling effort from 20 yards out, Maxwell stretching but with no chance of keeping it out.

It forced Fleetwood to attack the game a little more and they went close through David Ball, the former Peterborough man just losing the race with Scott Loach with the goal at his mercy.

Graham Alexander threw Ashley Hunter and Stephen Dobbie into the action, the changes producing a vital goal.

Conor McLaughlin turned his man down the right channel, sending a ball over for skipper Mark Roberts, his bullet header from point blank range hauling Fleetwood level.

Hunter’s pace could have sealed it, a stinging run down the right, a cross from the byline, Jamie Proctor slamming the ball against the woodwork.
