Jamille Matt teed up the striker on the stroke of half time, Ball finding himself one-on-one with Scott Fox in the Jaggy’s goal, the keeper out quickly, to snuff out the opportunity.

Before that Stephen Jordan had headed against the woodwork, Matt also wasting a number of half chances as Fleetwood dominated.

Fleetwood kept up the pressure after the break, superb footwork from Gareth Evans opening up Thistle, Josh Morris with a stinging drive from the edge of the area parried by Fox.

The Partick keeper was called into action again minutes later when Antoni Sarcevic launched a curling effort from the right - a smart save denying Fleetwood’s Wembley hero.

Matt had a late chance to seal victory, subs Matty Blair and Jamie Proctor combining well on the break to send the striker clear, Fox again out to deny Fleetwood their goal.

It wasn’t to be a happy ending to the afternoon for Matt who limped off the field a minute from time having gone down jumping for a header in the Partick box.

Physio Luke Bussey had to help the hitman from the Highbury pitch - a suspected knee injury casting doubt on his fitness ahead of next week’s big kick off.
