Fleetwood striker ready to up tempo

Striker Proctor started Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Coventry City, Pressley’s first game in charge at Highbury, and he believes his team-mates have bought into the new manager’s vision and backed the boss to transform Fleetwood’s fortunes.

Town are currently second-bottom of League One and face high-flying Burton on Saturday.

“Rome’s not built in a day,” said Proctor. “It’s going to take a few weeks for the ideas and everything to settle in.

“But I think you can already see one or two things coming across. The lads switched on to it really well.

“There were a couple of days when we got to work on one or two things and the lads bought into it. Everyone’s going to get on board with it.

“As the weeks go by the ideas will become integrated into everyone and it will become a good way of working.”

Pressley’s first game in charge, decided by a 90th- minute own goal, gave fans at Highbury a hint of what’s to come – Town stepping up to the tempo and pressing the ball at every opportunity.

Proctor insists Town have the squad to handle that demanding style of play.

He said: “He wants us all fit, all ready to go. We’ve got a really fit group. We’ve got a young group with a lot of energy.

“He’s got a good squad to work with and the new system is one which could benefit us in the long term.”

Proctor, like his team-mates, was left shellshocked by the nature of Saturday’s defeat.

But he refused to pin the blame on former Sky Blues defender Richard Wood, who got the agonising final touch for the own goal.

Town’s striker, more used to harrying defenders than pleading their case, believes his positioning was simply ‘too good’. “There’s nothing he could do. He’s done well to follow it in,” said Proctor.

“None of their strikers have followed it in. He’s got there, which all good defenders try to do, and he just can’t get out of the way. It’s just sneaked over the line.

“We’d defended well up to that point. They had good players and were a threat but we’d nullified it up to that point.”

“It didn’t look like there was a division between us but I don’t think there is, to be honest.

“We just need something. I’m not going to say we’re not getting the rub of the green, but you just need little things to start going in your favour, so you can kick on and start a run.

“This division is so tight. Everyone’s on such a similar level. It’s just about finding that consistency.”
