Neil told the Preston website: "He will add competition at the top end of the pitch. Ched is very physical; he wants to look after the ball, take it into his feet and get you up the pitch and equally score goals.

"He will be really excited about getting an opportunity in the Championship.

"Ched is an experienced player. He is a good lad - I have spoken to him at length and his character as much as anything else will be important for the team."

Evans will have to wait for his Preston debut as the striker is not eligible for Saturday's FA Cup third-round tie at Wycombe, having played for Fleetwood in this season's tournament at Hull City.

Even so, he is relishing his new challenge and said: "I am really excited for the next six months, getting back to the Championship is brilliant.

“If the chances are created I will definitely be trying to get on the end of them. There are some great players here and it’s a team that scores goals.

“I’m just really looking forward to the next six months and getting some goals, creating some goals, getting some wins and pushing Preston up the table.

“I’m playing at a good level with really good players, so I look forward to cracking on.”

Though a fairly quiet transfer window was expected at Fleetwood, they will probably look to boost their attacking options by replacing their number nine, whose departure does leave a hole.

Evans had scored seven times in 23 games this season, and Town have often relied on his goals and those of fellow frontman Paddy Madden.
