Jimmy Ryan came closest to breaking the deadlock as Fleetwood and Doncaster drew a blank at Highbury.

The midfielder rattled the crossbar with a quarter of an hour remaining - Town's best chance of a frustrating afternoon.

It was something of a slow burner for the hosts who were second best for much of the afternoon.

Doncaster, no great shakes themselves, made the most of their first half possession as Town struggled to find a telling final ball.

Lynden Gooch's blast from the left channel was tipped over by Chris Maxwell.

The Fleetwood keeper was then involved in a mix up with Joe Davis, the centre half selling the keeper short with a backpass, Andrew Williams almost taking advantage.

The best Steven Pressley's men could muster before the break came from a David Henen run, the on-loan Everton forward well below his best but picking out Amari'i Bell at the back post - the full back firing into the side netting.

There was little sign of improvement after the break, Gooch almost sneaking beyond Town but thwarted by a last ditch challenge.

The introduction of new boys Devante Cole and Alex Kiwomya turned the game in Fleetwood's favour - a welcome injection of pace and a little invention.

The two nearly combined to strike a crucial blow, Kiwomya breaking to the byline and pulling the ball back across the face, Cole sliding in seconds too late to make the difference.

Antoni Sarcevic showed some signs of his attacking flair returning, barrelling into the box but unable to fire through the crowded area.

Ryan it was who went closest, first grazing the bar from a set piece then picking up the ball 20 yards out and delivering a piledriver of a shot which slammed against the woodwork.

It was the closest either side came - a point not enough to help Fleetwood pull away from the pack at the bottom end of the division, dropping into the bottom four thanks to a comeback win for Shrewsbury Town.

Pressley will be hoping his new recruits will have had more time to acclimatise come Tuesday and the visit of high-flying Walsall.
