Fighting talk from Exiles boss

The caretaker boss, who has taken charge of The Exiles until the end of the season following Graham Westley’s sacking, has masterminded two straight wins since taking the reigns.

Newport bagged all three points at Morecambe on Tuesday night courtesy of Ryan Bird’s second half penalty; a win that lifts them above Leyton Orient on goal difference and seven points from safety with a game in hand.

“It is not easy, but the boys were outstanding,” Flynn said. “We had enough chances to wrap up the game earlier but the boys showed great character.

“We kept a clean sheet. I was very nervous, but tried not to show it.

“It’s a brilliant win. We will keep fighting and we will keep scrapping.”

The club parted company with former Preston North End boss Westley last week after leaving County 11 points adrift of safety.

Westley, who replaced Warren Feeney at Rodney Parade in October 2016, was County’s fifth manager since Justin Edinburgh left to join Gillingham in February 2015 and only spent five months in the post.

Flynn, a former Newport player, has been put in temporary charge until the end of the campaign – and he insists he will give everything to the cause between now and the end of the season.

He added: “We want to fight, we want to put the pressure on other teams and drag them in.

“We’re not going down without a fight, not on my watch. It’s not happening.

“The fans know what it means to me and I know what it means to the fans and now the players are seeing exactly what it means.

“I want to keep the club up and I want to give the fans belief.

“We’ve got to keep fighting and scrapping, keep getting wins, picking up points and catching the teams above us.

“Then it gets interesting. It drags other teams in and puts pressure on them.”

Joss Labadie, who scored the winner at Crewe last weekend, is County’s new captain having taken over the armband from Scot Bennett.

“Everyone in the dressing room believes that we can get out of this situation that we’re in and that’s exactly what we’re going to do,” Labadie said.

“It’s vital that we do get back-to-back wins and it’s something that we’re more than capable of and we believe we can do.”
