The Cod Army are believed to have usurped League One rivals Portsmouth to get the Liverpudlian's signature.

Connolly spent the second half of last season on loan at Highbury having spent the first part of the season at tomorrow's opposition Lincoln City.

The 23-year-old made 15 appearances for Joey Barton's men and scored twice, playing in both play-off semi final legs against Wycombe Wanderers.

The return of the versatile youngster means that Barton could once again look to use a 3-4-3 system that could be changed mid-game to a 4-3-3, with Connolly able to play both in midfield and defence and doing so last season on the Fylde coast.

Town's new no.4 will be unavailable for tomorrow's game against Lincoln City so will have to wait for his second debut.
