'Whirlwind' for boss Evans as Gate game is chosen for BBC coverage

Osman was co-commentating for the BBC, which broadcast last night's extra preliminary round tie live from Manchester.

Striker Ing scored a tremendous treble for the Marton club in the match played at Prestwich Heys, with Jake Higham also getting on the scoresheet before debutant Elliot Pond netted the fifth.

Osman said: "Squires Gate took control, got the ball forward and were very adventurous. Left-back Higham was non-stop and really did put Maine Road on back foot, and Ing stepped up with a quality hat-trick as they took control of the game.

"Ing has been impressive with his workrate and attitude, and has been prepared to run down the channels as well. He was terrific.

"We asked if the cameras would bring the best out of players but they did for him."

Gate only discovered on Monday afternoon that the BBC would be providing coverage on television and on online after the tie they originally selected was postponed.

Manager Luke Evans told The Gazette the club would receive a significant cash windfall from the broadcaster - and Gate can also look forward to facing Ashton United in the second round a week on Saturday.

Gate play a level above Maine Road in the North West Counties League premier division and went into the cup-tie on the back on an unbeaten pre-season campaign.

Match report to follow.
