The 24-year-old Welshman moved to Highbury from Barry Town in January last year and made five appearances for the club, his last as a late substitute in the play-off semi-final at Wycombe Wanderers in July.

The right-back had a successful loan spell with Hartlepool United earlier this year.

Hartlepool, managed by former AFC Fylde boss Dave Challinor, made no secret of their desire to sign Southam-Hales, who has instead joined their National League rivals.

Southam-Hales has signed a two-year deal at Edgeley Park and Hatters manager Jim Gannon told the Stockport County website: "He was a player we were monitoring for future recruitment but we are delighted that we have been a able to secure his services early for this coming season.

“Macauley will provide great quality in the attacking right-back and right wing-back roles. "

Fleetwood Town stated : "Everyone at the club would like to wish Macauley all the best and thank him for all his efforts whilst at the club."
