Coasters draw Kings Lynn in FA Cup

The Coasters are away to Kings Lynn in the fourth and final qualifying round of the FA Cup.

That is the prize for beating Buxton at the latest stage on Saturday.

Coasters’ trip to East Anglia in the FA Cup will be on October 25.

If AFC Fylde win, they will play in the first round proper.

Michael Barnes scored the only goal midway through the first half against Buxton, beating Arron Jameson one on one to stretch Fylde’s unbeaten run in all competitions to 12 games.

Buxton made it hard for Fylde and neither side created much early on, though a free-kick by Fylde’s Danny Rowe did fly just wide of the post after seven minutes.

But then Michael Potts, twice, and Richie Allen came close to opening the scoring for Fylde but all three strikes were off-target.

At the other end, Jonathan Williams’ long-range effort was deflected wide before Alastair Taylor sent a wild shot way over the bar on 21 minutes.

Fylde hit back on 23 minutes, when Barnes seized on a mistake from Shaun Tuton to race through and blast the ball past Jameson.

Fylde could have had a second three minutes later, when Bradley Barnes sent an ambitious volley over the bar.

And then Allen couldn’t beat Jameson after some excellent play allowed him space for a shot.

Taylor wasted another couple of half-chances for the visitors before Potts forced a good save from Jameson as the first half drew to a close. Rowe got too much on a free header 10 minutes after the restart, diverting Mike Barnes’ cross well wide.

Taylor eventually found the target but could only direct his shot straight at keeper Ben Hinchliffe, then Ash Palmer headed wide for the visitors just past the hour.

The Coasters then enjoyed a very good spell of possession and were unlucky not to add a second as Josh Langley and Liam Tomsett had chances.

The crowd of 639 looked set to witness man of the match Caspar Hughes’ first goal for Fylde when he surged forward from right-back but Jameson parried his bullet strike.

The keeper then denied loan striker Jamie Allen a debut goal 16 minutes from time, saving the Fleetwood Town attacker’s excellent 15-yard volley.

Fylde continued to hunt a second as Danny Lloyd had a shot cleared off the line, Joe Booth’s free-kick was tipped away and Brad Barnes’ low strike was well held.

However, Buxton will feel aggrieved to have been denied a penalty with eight minutes to go, when Josh Langley looked to have brought down Craig King.

Referee Anthony Backhouse awarded only a corner and the Coasters held on for the win.

Fylde manager Dave Challinor felt his side could have done better. He said: “It was great to win and keep our run going, but I was disappointed with our performance.

“I said to the lads afterwards that we’ve played an awful lot better. They’ve set the standard themselves and I’d say a minimum of four or five were not at their best.

“I’ve asked them many times to learn from our performances, even in victory. Hopefully today will show them that there is still a lot of work to do and that games will be difficult if we aren’t at it We need to get better.”
