Bowyer: Iron man Morris is a threat

Josh Morris' firepower does not surprise his former boss Gary Bowyer, '“ but what does shock the Blackpool chief is that a higher division club did not make a raid for the goal-hungry Scunthorpe United winger this summer.

Bowyer was a coach at Blackburn Rovers when Morris made his first team debut in a 7-1 defeat to Manchester United in the Premier League in 2011.

When Bowyer took over the reins at Rovers in 2013 he sent Morris on-loan to Carlisle United and Fleetwood Town with the youngster eventually leaving Ewood Park in 2015.

Fast forward six years from that top flight bow and both Morris, Bowyer and Rovers are all now in League One.

Morris rifled in 20 goals for the Iron last term to propel them to the play-offs.

He has picked up where he left off with four goals so far this term and Bowyer is surprised that no Championship or Premier League club swooped.

And he warned his players to be wary of his eye for goal this weekend at Glanford Park as he praised the now 25-year-old’s desire to play football.

He said: “From years ago Josh always had the ability to score goals.

“It is no fluke because at the end of training he would spend time working on his finishing and the fact that he has got so many games under his belt is a credit to him because he always wanted to play football.

“He was never happy just being a sub or in the squad he wanted to go out and play first team football what surprised me is that he did what he did last season and he is still there.

“For a midfielder to have scored that many goals – and not just that, assists – and not to have got his move for me was really surprising that people higher have not took the gamble on him.

“It is not even a gamble when you have got a midfielder that can do that but obviously Scunthorpe will be delighted they have kept him.

“He has a wonderful eye for goal and he is very focused in that he wants to shoot quite a lot, we are going to have to be aware of that.”
