Bowyer: Former Blackpool boss Grayson needs more time

The former Blackpool manager was appointed boss at Bradford on February 11 following Stuart McCall’s sacking.

The Bantams were still in the play-offs at that point but since then, they have dropped down to 11th place following a run of just one win in 13.

Since arriving at the Yorkshire club, Grayson has overseen just one victory – the 1-0 win against Gillingham last month.

Despite their poor form, Bowyer insists the Bantams still have plenty of quality to give his side problems.

“I don’t think Simon has been there long enough and they’ve been unfortunate with cancellations,” he said. “That doesn’t help as you obviously want to get a rhythm going.

“They’ve played a couple of different formations so he’s still trying to figure out which is the best one to suit his players that he has got there.

“But it doesn’t matter what team they put out, they’ve got quality in their side.”

Despite Bradford’s woeful recent run, they remain in with a shout of finishing in the top six according to Bowyer due to their games in hand.

Grayson’s men are currently eight points off the play-off spots but have only played 38 games this season, two less than a lot of the teams around him.

When asked if Bradford have nothing to play for between now and the end of the season, Bowyer replied: “I think if you asked that question to Simon Grayson he might rip your head off because they can still get in the play-offs, and we’re aware of that.

“We can’t look at any other game than Bradford City at this moment in time.

“We know from playing them on the opening day of the season what quality they have in the squad and they have games in hand to actually make the play-offs.

“There will be a big backing from them, so we’ll need our supporters as well. But it’s about us getting a reaction and competing better than we did in the second half against Oldham.”
