Bowyer admits Blackpool could do with some more experience

Bowyer admits in an ideal world he would be able to rely on one or two more experienced heads

The Seasiders have one of the youngest squads in League One, a group of players dominated by young loanees such as Joe Lumley (22), Sean Longstaff (20), Callum Cooke (20) and Viv Solomon-Otabor (22).

While there is plenty of talent among them, Bowyer has repeatedly said his youngsters have plenty more to learn.

It comes as his side, who travel to league leaders Wigan Athletic tonight, are on a woeful run of form which has seen them win just two of their last 18 outings.

It has coincided with a slide down the league table, which has left them just two points above the drop zone.

“This is how it goes for you sometimes at certain stages of the season,” Bowyer said. “What you do during those patches is learn a hell of a lot about yourselves – me as a manager and the players as well.

“All you do is keep training hard, keep playing smart and keep wanting to get better.

“I can’t go out and buy anyone, so the ones we have we have to keep working with.

“We have to keep that spirit, keep that belief, keep concentrating on things we can control and not use them as an excuse.

“We’ve just got to stick together.

“We went through a similar period last year when we were drawing games.

“People were saying, ‘All these draws, oh God!’ Well, all those draws added up and made a difference.

“We’re a young group. You look at the average age and they’re learning.

“It’s about cutting your cloth accordingly with what we have.

“In an ideal situation you might have a few more experienced players but we haven’t got them.”

Blackpool’s winless run at Bloomfield Road continued on Saturday as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Walsall.

Although the result, which means they have now failed to win in their last nine games on home turf, does little to ease their relegation fears, Bowyer was delighted with the manner in which his players fought back from a goal behind on two separate occasions.

“You look at the way the players reacted (to going behind), it’s fantastic,” he added.

“Wigan might be top of the league but we will go there and really look forward to the game.

“It will be a nice pitch. It will be two teams trying to play the right way and who knows?”
