The announcement came after the Sunday Alliance and Blackpool and District Youth League had told The Gazette they would happily play into the summer if possible in order to complete the season’s fixtures.

Alliance secretary Frank Kennedy told The Gazette that his competition was in favour of playing on.

“There are no issues from our point of view with playing into the summer assuming the council pitches are available,” he said.

“We are already behind on games because of the weather but we’d be happy to continue. We had fixed the date for the Gledhill Cup final (traditionally staged at Bloomfield Road).”

The last Alliance fixtures were played on March 8. They were given the option of playing the following weekend but chose not to.

Kennedy added: “Sunday 15 was difficult because the Government advice was that we could play and the Lancashire FA said it was up to individual leagues.

“We took the decision not to play and then the following day everything stopped.”

Those deliberations over playing a fortnight ago seem irrelevant now, and Kennedy agrees that what matters most is to look after each other.

“You do feel like a prisoner in your home but it has to be done,” he added. “I was bit disappointed with the selfish attitude of some people who were continuing to go out.

“I’m also concerned there will be a lot more overweight people by the time this is over.”
