Blackpool striker repaid head coach's faith with Burton Albion brace

The 23-year-old netted a brace to help the Seasiders claim a much-needed victory, their first away from home in over 13 months.

The striker’s double on his 12th appearance were his first goals for the club since joining from Rotherham United during pre-season.

“There’s no better feeling, but it’s about time to be honest,” Yates admitted.

“But I’m buzzing. More importantly, I’m more buzzing that we’ve got our first away win.

“Maybe I’ve been putting a bit too much pressure on myself, it’s more about the lads and the three points.

“For the first goal, I saw Sullay (Kaikai) take his first touch and it dragged two defenders away. As forward players we’ve been working on our link-up and he’s picked a great pass out and made it quite easy for me.

“With Burton’s goal, it’s a bit unlucky and we had to re-gather. But we did our bit and pushed on to get that second goal. We just had to have that bit of belief and thankfully we got the penalty.

“From pre-season I’ve tried to get the penalties and the lads believed in me, so it was nice to get the match ball and put it away.”

Yates played noticeably closer to Gary Madine in attack on Saturday, a partnership that paid dividends with the two linking up superbly.

“Gaz is experienced, he’s a very good player,” Yates said.

“We’ve been working on it all week to get around him because, let’s be honest, it’s going to be hard for any defender to defend against him.

“He made my job a lot easier and I can’t thank him enough.”

The Seasiders have yet to claim back-to-back wins this season and that’s something they’ll be looking to put right when they welcome struggling Wigan Athletic to Bloomfield Road on Tuesday night.

“We’re not going to celebrate this too much because we’ve got to go straight into Tuesday now,” Yates said.

“We’re training on Sunday and Monday, so we’re straight back to it and we’ll move onto the next game.”
