As Gary Madine challenged for the ball in the air, it appeared to clearly strike the outstretched hand of a Luton player.

Because of the ensuing chaos, with CJ Hamilton hitting the post and both Callum Connolly and James Husband being denied, Blackpool never had a chance to appeal.

Either way, referee Tim Robinson appeared to have no interest.

When asked if he thought it was a penalty, Appleton told The Gazette: “I think it was.

“We pointed it out to the referee but we got done again. It was a clear handball, it was a clear penalty.

“All I would say is that it just summed up our day, because even after that we have two or three scrambling moments where we could and should have scored.”

Other than demanding a more clinical edge in front of goal, Appleton couldn’t fault the effort of his depleted Blackpool side as they gave as good as they got against a physical Luton outfit.

“The fans have appreciated how hard they worked and how well they played at times,” Pool’s head coach added.

“The players kept going and they put them under the cosh. Unfortunately we couldn’t get the goal.”
