The striker, who hails from Gateshead, missed Tuesday's defeat to Tranmere Rovers with a stiff neck.

It was a knock he suffered in the goalless draw at Fleetwood Town at the weekend, where the 29-year-old was brought off in the first minute of the second half.

Madine is still carrying the knock but is said to have improved during the week.

“Gary has still got an issue with his neck," Critchley confirmed.

“We’re hoping he will train later today, if not then hopefully tomorrow.

“There’s a chance with Gary. He’s feeling a little bit better and with him being a Geordie and this being Sunderland, I’m sure he’ll be doing everything he can to be part of the game on Saturday.

“I know he’ll be desperate to be involved.

Ollie Turton trained the other day so we hope he’s back to full health and we’re hoping he will be fit and available.

“Other than Sullay Kaikai, we have no other injuries or concerns from the other night so the squad will be very similar to what it was against Tranmere.”
