Having started out in youth and academy football with the likes of Reading and Celtic, he's also held several high-profile consultancy roles.

According to the Seasiders, Stephenson will oversee and support the club's football operations, ranging from recruitment to the "continued integration of the academy system".

“John is a really experienced guy who has been at a number of football clubs. I’m delighted he’s joining us,” Critchley told The Gazette.

“He’s got a wealth of experience, so he’ll be able to help me and the staff in terms of the organisational point of view during the week.

“I’m delighted he’s joined. I’ve already had a good few conversations with John and I’m sure he’ll be a massive benefit to me and the club going forward.”

Critchley, speaking after Blackpool’s 4-0 FA Cup win against Harrogate Town on Saturday, now turns his focus to tomorrow night’s return to league action.

The Seasiders return to Bloomfield Road after three straight away games to take on a Portsmouth side that sit fifth in League One.

“They’re a very strong team and they were unfortunate to miss out on the play-offs a few months back,” Critchley said.

“They’re a big club in this division and they’ll have aspirations of getting promoted.

“They’re very good away from home and very hard to play against, so we’ll have to rest and recover and be at our best.

“But what a game to look forward to for our players because we’re in good form.”

Blackpool, who have won six of their last seven games in all competitions, are getting nearer and nearer to boasting a full-strength squad.

“There’s only Matty Virtue and MJ Williams, who are getting closer, who are out injured at the moment,” Critchley said.

“We have a strong squad in depth, you only have to look at Daniel Gretarsson and Sullay Kaikai not even being involved on Saturday.

“It’s causing me a few headaches and a few problems, so that will be a test for me and the players which is something we’ve spoken about - being humble, being professional and not putting yourself before the team, that’s really important.”
