The former Liverpool and Hull City man was in impressive form as the Seasiders dug in to claim a hard-earned 2-0 win against Northampton Town.

Following Marvin Ekpiteta’s early opener, the midfielder came within a whisker of doubling Blackpool’s lead midway through the second-half when he hit the post.

But thankfully it wasn’t to matter as Jerry Yates made sure of the points in stoppage-time with his 10th goal from his last 18 games.

“The result is great, but I think the scoreline could have been even greater,” Stewart told The Gazette.

“We should have used the ball a bit better at times. Had we done that the score would have been a lot higher. But to win 2-0 and to keep a clean sheet is a very good result for us.

“It was good to make my first start. It was a good game to start I guess, because physically it didn’t feel that challenging as some other games can be.

“I’m delighted to make my first start and to keep a clean sheet is something I take a lot of pride in.”

Not only was it Stewart’s first start for Blackpool, it was also his first start since turning out for Hull in the Championship in July.

The 27-year-old, who made his Pool debut off the bench against Wigan Athletic last week, added: “My legs are feeling surprisingly good. I felt really good out there.

“There was only one time where I needed a bit of a breather which was when I made a lengthy run, but other than that I felt great.

“By the time I got to the Northampton goal my legs felt so heavy, but I think the keeper actually got his fingertips to it so it was a decent reaction from him.

“I actually wanted my shot to go on the floor but I lifted it a little bit, so it suited the keeper. But I was gutted I couldn’t finish it off.”
