The league campaign gets underway on September 12 and will come to a conclusion on May 8/9, the EFL has confirmed.

However, the competitive action will begin with a Carabao Cup first round clash on Saturday, September 5, a week before the league season starts.

This will be followed by an EFL Trophy group game on the following Tuesday or Wednesday before the league season officially gets underway the following weekend.

The draw for the first round of the Carabao Cup will take place on Sky Sports News next Tuesday at a time to be confirmed - with the unseeded draw divided into a northern and southern section.

Should Blackpool or Fleetwood draw a Championship side, their first round encounters could take place in August to avoid a clash with the international break.

Carabao Cup second, third and fourth round ties will be played on consecutive midweek dates starting September 15/16.

Premier League sides will enter the competition at the second round stage, although those in European competition will enter in round three.

The draw for the EFL Trophy group stage will also take place next Tuesday, with Blackpool and Fleetwood to discover their opponents at 1.30pm on talkSPORT 2.

The first round of the FA Cup begins on Saturday, November 7, with replays being scrapped to help ease fixture congestion.

To go alongside the midweek cup clashes, both Blackpool and Fleetwood will have to play as many as 11 Tuesday or Wednesday league games as a result of the season being shortened.

The EFL said: “Due to the unprecedented challenges facing the fixture calendar as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and starting six weeks later than usual, the Championship will feature 13 midweek match rounds whilst League One and League Two will have 11 respectively throughout season 2020/21.

The season will culminate in the play-off finals taking place at Wembley Stadium over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend May 29-31, 2021.”
