Chris Maxwell on the importance of his sweeper-keeper role for Blackpool

The Seasiders missed the chance to claim a third straight League One victory on Saturday as they slumped to a 2-0 loss at Portman Road.

Neil Critchley’s side have the opportunity to put things right tonight, when they host bottom side Burton Albion at Bloomfield Road (7pm).

Goalkeeper Chris Maxwell has called on all at Blackpool FC to maintain a sense of perspective after Saturday's defeat

Reflecting on Saturday’s setback, keeper Maxwell said: “It was just an off-day. I don’t think we were quite at the races. Myself and every single player that participated in that, we all believe we can do better.

“It’s really important – and it’s something we talked about in the dressing room afterwards – that we have perspective. We can’t get too high when we win a couple of games and equally we can’t get too low when we get beaten.

“We all know we could have done better but this is football, this is sport.”

The loss saw Pool slip back into the lower half of the table and Maxwell added: “We came through a tough period at the start of the season and we went on a magnificent run. We’ve got some very, very positive results and some really good performances throughout the campaign, so a new day and a new week gives us a new perspective on things.

“There’s always another game to put things right. We know why we lost the game as a group and as individuals. I think the problems start arising when you don’t know what went wrong. If you know what went wrong you can fix it.

“We’re going to lose more games between now and the end of the season, that is a fact.

“Every single team in the league will lose between now and the end of the season but we’ve got to limit that.

“We’re still in a good place. We’ve had some really positive results recently and we’ve got to make sure this is just a minor hiccup in what we want to be a successful season.”

What made Saturday all the worse was having to endure a long bus journey back to the Fylde coast from Suffolk.

Captain Maxwell admits he’s the type to dwell on the game and replay incidents over and over in his mind.

The 30-year-old added: “I’m the type that can never switch off and I’m constantly told that as well.

“I’m always looking to improve and gain those fine margins, and I’m constantly dwelling or planning.

“So when you get beaten on Saturday, it’s awful. It is like your world has ended.

“I don’t want to speak to anybody. I don’t want to do anything.

“At the same time, the older I get the more perspective you gain.

“Coming back from Ipswich wasn’t a great journey home, but at the same time, you look towards Tuesday night and want to put it right.

“That anger, that frustration and that negative outlook you have needs to be turned into a positive one, because if we don’t pull our heads out of the sand quickly, that one game quickly turns into two games and that’s disastrous.

“As a group, we’re really positive and we go again.”
