Blackpool’s busy transfer window was what the club needed

Simon Grayson says he doesn’t believe Blackpool brought in too many players during the January transfer window.

The Seasiders made 12 signings in total last month, while a further 12 departed in what was a hectic and unprecedented period of transfer activity for the club.

While Grayson has previously admitted it might take time for some of the new arrivals to get up to speed, the Blackpool boss says doing so much business was the right thing to do.

“As a football club, from Simon Sadler to Ben Mansford, to myself and the recruitment staff, we all felt we needed to change the dynamics of the group around,” he said.

“It was only fair to a few of the players that we changed around because they weren’t going to be getting any game time.

“We had some younger players that left the football club, some experienced players that needed to go and get game time and others that were there or thereabouts, but letting them go would allow us to bring in the better players we think we’ve got.

“It is a balancing act and you do risk sometimes having to wait for players to gel but I always feel good footballers, from the Championship to the Premier League, understand to do things quicker than other lads from maybe League One or League Two.

“If we had gone and done 12 deals that were all relevant to League One and League Two then you would think that would take a lot of time to do.

“The majority of the deals we’ve done have been Championship and higher.”

Most accept that, on paper at least, Blackpool have ended the window in a far stronger position than they began it.

But some fans have expressed concern about the speed of the squad turnover.

“I’m certainly happy with the business we’ve done,” Grayson added.

“When we spoke earlier in the window I talked about us being one of the busiest clubs and we proved that.

“We felt we needed to change not only the dynamic of the group but also the quality of the group.

“When you’ve seen the signings we’ve brought in, with experienced players like Gary Madine and younger, hungry players that are held in high regard like Connor Ronan and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Taylor Moore, Jordan Thorniley and many, many more – you’ve got to say it was a productive window.

“It was also a tough window because there was a lot of work going on with phone calls happening behind the scenes, but I’m really pleased with it.”
